第一章Art for art's sake
In this unit, we are going to have a tour in the long history of art gallery to meet a few paintings, listen to their stories, and gain the pure delight. After finishing the study of this unit, you are equipped with knowledge of how to introduce a painting.

In this unit, you are supposed to finish a unit task. For this part, I will tell you how I will facilitate you to accomplish this goal.

For this part, we are going to analyze the text structure of the passage the Mystery of Girl With a Pearl Earring. We will follow the passage to learn how each part serves serve its purpose.

For this part, we are going to tackle some language points in the text, which include some new words and long sentences.

●1.4Reading Across Culture
For this part, we are going to know another five top paintings in western art. First, we will identify and appreciate these paintings. And then, we will see other alternative approaches to introduce a painting in this article. For the last part, we will discuss the differences between western and Chinese paintings, which enables us to appreciate both of them. From the comparison, it offers a vocabulary pool and insights to Chinese painting.

第三章Science and Superstition
In spite of the rapid development of science and technology at the moment, superstition is still widespread. In China, for example, there is a general popularity of 8 and 4, while in most western countries, 13 is considered an unknown symbol, if the 13th of a month coincides with Friday, it will be called Black Friday. To make matters worse, these ideas are often swaying our emotions, dominating our choices, and even messing up our lives unconsciously. Can't science explain the relationship between perceptions of superstition and some interesting coincidence? The articles of this chapter will provide the answer. This chapter consists of five sections: an overview of the first section; reading comprehension of the second section; the language in use of the third section, the culture of the fourth section, and the writing of the fifth section. Finally, through the study of this chapter, hopefully you can build up a rightful interpretation of superstitions.

The first section is an overview. Briefly introduce the content of each section and the learning objectives of this chapter.

●3.2Structure
The second section interprets the article "can bad luck be explained?" First of all, from a structural point of view, this article is a typical writing model from abstract to concrete; in terms of content, the author first takes the superstitious concept of "bad things into three" as an example to explain why someone is unlucky partly a question of probability and partly a question of psychology. Next, exemplifies the things that everyone will encounter in daily life to prove the previous analysis. Finally, explains a few sentences in the article that are complex in structure and easy to cause misunderstanding.

●3.3Vocabulary
Section 3 is language in use which includes the meaning and use of several commonly used words and phrases; a suffix that constitutes an abstract noun and a grammatical structure commonly used when referring to a topic.

●3.4Reading Across Culture
This section focuses on superstitions in different cultures, like ordinary numbers representing various superstitions.

●3.5Writing
This section introduces the writing modes and methods of compare and contrast composition. First elaborate on the six steps of writing, and then illustrate two writing modes of this kind of composition.

第四章High days and holidays
In this chapter we are going to learn three passages related to festivals. Upon learning these articles, we will learn some new words, cultural phenomena as well as some writing techniques. Students will get a deeper understanding of both Chinese and western festivals through the completion of the unit task on the comparison between Chinese and western festivals.

In this session we will introduce briefly the contents of this chapter and the group task related to this chapter.

●4.2Structure
In this part we will learn about the structure and style of Passage Two. Specifically, we will learn how to organize arguments and how to use irony and metaphor.

●4.3Vocabulary
We will focus on the important words and sentences in the text passages in this session. Some commonly used festival-related words and expressions are explained in this part. We will also cover the future perfect tense, fronting and the usage of “as”.

●4.4Reading Across Culture
In this part we are going to learn about the traditions of the Day of the Dead through the reading-across-culture passage. We will learn this Mexican festival’s cultural indications and connotations and try to compare it to the Chinese Qing Ming Festival.

●4.5Writing
In this last session we will learn three writing techniques in regards to how to describe a festival. Sample sentences and a passage will show students the application of these writing techniques.

第五章Nine to five
In this unit, the job-hunting related topics will be discussed and resume writing will be introduced.

In this lecture, the arrangement of teaching will be introduced.

In this lecture, the background information of the reading passage will be introduced, the structure of the passage will be analyzed and several difficult sentences will be learned as well.

Useful words and expressions and culture points in the reading passage will be introduced.

●5.4Reading Across Cultures
In this lecture, procedures of job-hunting will be discussed. Resumes in different cultures will be introduced and a comparison between CV and resume will be conducted.

In this lecture, the types of resume, the structure of resume and resume writing will be introduced.

第六章Gender studies
This unit focuses on the two passages about gender difference. We will learn about the gender difference in English gossip and workplace. Besides, the language features and structures of academic writings are explained in some sections.
