Hello! Welcome to Introduction to Linguistics!

This course serves as an invitation to linguistics. It introduces main branches of micro-linguistics and theories of modern linguistics. We are going to discuss mainly six branches of micro-linguistics. They are phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics. We are going to meet some linguists together with their ideas and theories about language, like Saussure, Malinowski, Firth, Halliday, Sapir, Whorf, Chomsky, etc.

This course aims to deepen your understanding of language, language use and language learning, acquaint you with a general knowledge of linguistics and enable you to apply theories of linguistics in language use, teaching and learning. Upon the completion of this course, you will be acquainted with the nature of language；you will acquire a general knowledge of micro-linguistics；you will have a general understanding of schools and theories of modern linguistics.
