大学英语II是一门基础必修课，授课对象为非英语专业本科生。是各专业培养目标的一个有机组成部分。大学英语教学是以英语语言与知识技能、学习策略和跨文化交际为主要内容，以外语教学理论为指导，并集多种教学模式和教学手段为一体的教学体系。其教学目的是培养学生的英语综合应用能力，特别是听说能力，使他们在今后的工作和交往中用英语有效地进行口头和书面的信息交流。同时增强其自主学习能力，提高综合文化素养，以适应我国经济发展和国际交流。本课程选取《新世纪大学英语II》 中的六个单元，即 Unit 2 Optimism and Positive Thinking， Unit 3 The Road to Success，Unit 4 Being Creative，Unit 5 The Value of Life，Unit 6 Learning to Work Together 和 Unit 7 Adversity。它们既相互关联，又相互联系。本课程以教育部印发的《大学英语课程教学要求》为导向，以学生为中心，以知识为主线，以应用为核心，将英语学习的实用性、交际性和合作性贯穿于教学中。本课程不仅是一门语言基础课程，也是拓宽知识、了解世界文化的素质课程，兼具工具性和人文性。通过本课程的学习，学生能够比较熟练地掌握和运用一些与学习、生活或工作相关话题的英语表达；学生能够比较熟练地运用所学的英语词汇、语法及篇章结构等语言知识进行阅读、写作或者翻译，并掌握一定的阅读、写作和翻译技巧；学生能够习得一定的跨文化交际知识，能够较好地处理与对方在文化和价值观等方面的不同，并能根据交际需要较好地使用交际策略。
