Unit 1 Globalization and Intercultural Commnuincation
Since modern transportation and communications reduce time and the distance, the whole world has become a village, a global village. The development of economic globalization gives every global villager a greater possibility to be involved in communication with people from different culture. So it’s a necessity to know the importance of intercultural communication. In this unit, we’ll focus on the definition and causes of globalization, global village’s social effects and the origin of intercultural communication in modern history. -

Unit 2 Communication and Culture
As Edward T. Hall points out, “Culture is communication and communication is culture.” You “learn” your culture via communication, and at the same time, communication is a reflection of culture. They are inseparable. The study of intercultural communication is the study of culture and communication, therefore, in this unit, we will have a better understanding of communication through learning the essential components of it. Besides, we will focus on the components of culture by using two diagrams, and illustrate the functions of culture. -

What does “culture” mean to us? It may mean many things. This section focuses on culture and its components by using two diagrams for illustration. The onion-diagram helps to illustrate the different components of culture, and the iceberg model further describes what the values consist of. -

What does culture do for human beings? Why do we need culture? As an essential component of the effort of human beings to survive and thrive in their particular environment, culture serves multiple functions. This section illustrates five functions of culture, which can help to have a further understanding of culture.

Unit 3 Verbal Communication
The importance of study of verbal language as part of intercultural communication is clearly captured in “Language has created the word ‘loneliness’ to express the pain of being alone and the word ‘solitude’ to express the joy of being alone.” So our task in this unit is to develop an understanding and appreciation of verbal language as it functions in intercultural communication. Definitions and functions of verbal communication will first be covered. However, different countries have different ways of saying things. Thus direct and indirect communication styles will be examined, and cultural differences in verbal communication will also be illustrated. -

Unit 4 Non-verbal Communication
Nonverbal communication refers to communication without the use of words. Nonverbal communication can be classified into four categories like kinesics, proxemics, paralanguage and chronemics. In this unit, the functions of nonverbal communication, body language decoding and personal space are highly stressed. The importance of nonverbal communication tells us that sometimes nonverbal signals play a more decisive role than verbal messages in determining communicative effects, so the need to master the knowledge of nonverbal behavior in another culture increases the challenge of working successfully in an international context. -

Every culture has a set of hidden cultural rules concerning the physical space between people when communicating. Breaking any of these rules could be interpreted as impolite or even threatening. -

Unit 4-3 Contradicting in Nonverbal Communication
This section focuses on the functions of nonverbal communication. Contradicting is one of the functions in nonverbal communication, Contradicting refers to the communication that sends conflicting information verbally or nonverbally. When contradictory messages are sent through both verbal and nonverbal channels, people tend to choose nonverbal actions, and the reason is demonstrated as well.

Unit 5 Cultural Values
Cultural values are the elements or convictions common to a group of people, which determine the way of being and guide the behavior and decisions of individuals within the same group. Values are the most important variables in intercultrural communication as differences in values create gaps in communication and could even cause non-communication. In this unit, we will focus on patterns of friendship in different cultures as well as family values in different countries so that we can communicate interculturally. -

Cultural values play a critical part in intercultural communication. This section elaborates on the cultural values’ definition, two typical attitudes towards them, the cultural differences between the Chinese and the Westerners, and the recommended strategies to adopt in intercultural communication. -

This section mainly discusses different patterns of friendship in different cultures. It first introduces various levels of friendship, and then compares the patterns of friendship between people in China and America. Lastly, some tips are offered on how to make friends with Americans in college. -

This section offers a general account of definition of family, forms of family and family values. Due to cultural diversity, family values differ sharply around the world. In some cultures, the family is the center of life; while in other cultures, the individual is primary. Some cultures value the elderly, while others do not show great respect for them.

讨论文化休克给人们带来的不同程度的影响,进行个案分析。
Unit 6 Culture Shock
When an individual enters an alien culture, he or she is like a fish out of water, he or she may suffer from cultural shock. And if we have to be exposed to a new culture for an extended period of time, we need to cope with the cultural changes brought about by continuous firsthand contact with another culture.Then we have to develop some adaptive cultural transformation competence to make ourselves adapt to the new culture as quickly as possible. Therefore, this unit will cover culture shock, reverse culture shock and cultural adaptation. -

This section centers around the topic: Culture Shock, which is psychological condition of confusion and anxiety affecting a person suddenly exposed to an alien culture. The phases, causes and symptoms of culture shock are also described in details in this part. The four stages of culture shock are honeymoon, culture shock, adjustment and adaptation. And the process of culture shock is like a journey so that it’s a must for people to observe, learn and adapt to new cultures. So to speak, effectively dealing with culture shock requires recognition of culture shock occurrences to overcome culture shock with stable adaptations. -

This section focuses on cultural adaptation. If we have to be exposed to a new culture for an extended period of time, we need to cope with the cultural shock brought about by continuous firsthand contact with another culture. This section focuses on reverse culutre shock. Moving from one culture to another, people may suffer from culture shock. However, when they return home, most will actually suffer from reverse culture shock, experiencing more stress during reentry than during their entry into another culture. With the rapid development of economic globalization, intercultural communication has mushroomed. However, even in one country, sharing with similar cultures and customs, people still will find it hard to communicate, let alone people with different cultural backgrounds. Therefore, it is essential and urgent to develop intercultural communication competence. In this unit, we will center on competence required in the process of cross-cultural communication and potential barriers to effective intercultural communication, for identification of these problems will give insight into the components of intercultural communication competence and guide us to improve intercultural communication as well. -
