第一章Living Green
In this unit ,we shall talk about how to live a green life. We have all heard warnings of the dangers arising from global coal, oil and gas. Even without that danger the world faces the problem that many of the resources on which we rely will run out one day if we continue to use them at an ever—creasing rate. So everyone should do small things in daily life to conserve resources.

●1.1Opener
In this section, we shall look at some pictures and work with partners to talk about the negative impact of our modern lifestyle on the environment and how to live green in our daily lives. Everybody should make an effort to make a difference to our environment.

●1.2Reading & Interacting
In the section, the text shares a story about how the writer and her family move from the city Las Vegas to the remote countryside and discover the simple life. The family accomplished their will in the country, in other words, they learn how to live green.
There are also some difficult sentences explained and analyzed in this section, where it used as formal subject is involved. -
●1.3Language Focus
In this section, four kinds of transitive verbs followed by another verb as an object are introduced. When a transitive verb is followed by another verb as an object, sometimes it can only use infinitive, sometimes it can only use v-ing forms, sometimes it can use infinitive or v-ing forms with the same meaning, sometimes it can use infinitive or v-ing forms with different meanings. In addition, we deal with the use of the emphatic it and the use of the anticipatory it.

In this section, a short video clip in this part introduces a couple who moved to the woods to live in a tiny home without electricity. Diana was looking for emptiness when she came here seven years ago . But over time, that has changed. Now she is here, like her husband, in search of completeness.

In this section, students are required to form groups of 4-5 students to do some training exercise to improve your speaking skills. After watching a video clip of Alison Zeuschel and her family, you will get some information to do an interview on lifestyle issues in a group of five people.

●1.6Writing
In this section, on one hand, students are required to write a paragraph about what you can do in your daily life with regard to green, sustainable living. When you have finished, exchange your writing with a partner, using the criteria for evaluation.
On the other hand, students are required to learn the writing of English CV.

第二章Tales of Love
Tales of true love are always popular and come in many shapes and sizes. Some are true; others, fiction. Most catch our interest by showing their love in struggling to overcome obstacles in different forms.

●2.1Opener
Our opener covers two different types of couples who love each other a lot. One couple is Qian Zhongshu and Yang Jang and the other is David and Victoria Beckham, whom have been focused on in the opener.

●2.2Reading & Interacting
This text consists of the correspondence exchanged between a serviceman in the U.S. Army and his wife back home shortly before D-Day during World War II. The correspondence is organized by date.
There are also some difficult sentences explained and analyzed in this section, where the attributive clauses are involved. -
●2.3Language Focus
On one hand in this section, three differences between all and all of are introduced in details. On the other hand, one sentence pattern of not… until…. is interpreted and exercised afterwards.

●2.4Viewing and Listening
In the video clip, Benedict Cumberbatch, a British actor, reads a letter by Chris Barker, a serviceman in North Africa during World War II, to Bessie Moore, his girlfriend. After viewing the video clip for the first time, try to answer the following questions. Then, fill in the blanks with the words or phrases they get from the video clip by listening to it again.

●2.5Speaking
In this section, students are required to do an interview of DeRonda Elliott about the letters her parents exchanged during World War II in a group of two people. Before making the interview, watch a video clip of interview and try to get some information and key points concerning the questions and answers of the interview.

●2.6Writing
In this section, students, on one hand, are required to work individually on a condolence letter. Suppose they are close friends of the Elliott family. Write a letter of condolence (吊唁) to Pauline on the death of Frank. Before they start, they should study the following tips and sample letter. At the same time, check and fix grammar mistakes for each other. While doing their writing, students will have to pay special attention to the use of tenses.
On the other hand, students are allowed 30 minutes to write a cover letter, which is an application letter or Letter of interest in the business letter format. The cover letter aims to get you an interview, to give the employer an overview of why you’re a good candidate for the job, and to make them want to review your qualifications.

In this unit we shall be looking at friendship. As life goes on, we keep making friends. As with any relationship, friendship brings support and joy and occasionally conflict. Why do some friendships last while others weaken and fall apart? And just what is friendship? Is it the same the whole world over? Or do people in different countries expect different things of friends? These are just a few of the questions we shall be looking for answers to in this part.

In our opener, we will talk about friendship with the help of some famous quotations. In each of the following pictures there is a quotation. Go through all of them and find out which one is your favorite.

●3.2Reading & Interacting
To begin with, the author simply puts forward the question to be discussed and answered in the passage: Why do some friendships end, no matter how much you want them to last? By quoting his two relevant articles about friendship, the author points out the four reasons why friendship.

●3.3Language Focus
On one hand in this section, the usages of prefixation are introduced in details, such as un-, in-, im-, il-, ir-, dis-, mis- and de-, etc. On the other hand, two sentence patterns of when it comes to… and no matter what/where/how… are interpreted and exercised afterwards.

In the video clip, Michelle Wilson for About.com talks about how to get along with your roommates. Then fill in the blanks according to what you have heard. Before you start, getting to know the words and expressions in the box might be helpful.

In this section, students are required to work in pairs with one taking the role of Michelle Wilson and the other taking the role of one of the students in the audience. The student asks Michelle questions about what he/she didn’t understand in her talk or what he/she is especially interested in, e.g. Before making the interview, watch a video clip and try to get some information and key points concerning the questions and answers.

●3.6Writing
In this section, students, on one hand, are required to work individually to develop the topic sentence Friendship is often compared to a flower into a paragraph. Before they start, they should study the following tips and sample letter. At the same time, check and fix grammar mistakes for each other. While doing their writing, students will have to pay special attention to the use of tenses.
On the other hand, students are allowed 30 minutes to write a letter of invitation, which is used to invite the receiver to attend an event or a place. The letter of invitation should contain the following elements: the reasons of the invitation, the contents of the invitation, such as the nature of the matter, the place and time of the event and requirements as well as wishes.

In this unit we shall be looking at studying abroad. Certainly study abroad can be challenging, a you leave behind the comfortably familiar to become a struggler in a new land. Then why go? Well, one good reason is that it will hopefully make us all like one another better and lessen dangerous distrust between nations. Another good reason is that when you come back you will certainly see everything with fresh eyes. Living in other countries not only teaches us about the world beyond our borders. It also teaches us about ourselves.

In this section, students are required to watch a video clip about the about a news report of Chinese students studying in the U.S. Then work with your partner and try to answer the questions that follow.

●4.2Reading & Interacting
In this section, some information is shared with the students about studying abroad. The author compared her feeling of missing home to the theme of a historic, classic book the Odyssey---going home and her feeling of being torn by conflicts to the theme of another book the Aeneid. In this way she wanted to show us that life abroad is quite different from that in China and study there is rather difficult for foreign students like her in that she not only had difficulty in listening and speaking, but she could follow the teacher in the class as for the note-taking is concerned.
There are also some difficult sentences explained and analyzed in this section, where the gerunds are involved. -
●4.3Language Focus
On one hand in this section, some adjectives followed by the infinitive structure are introduced here: afraid, content, disappointed, eager, glad, happy, reluctant, sad, sorry, surprised and willing. On the other hand, the usage of the sentence pattern What better way to do … than to do …/doing … is interpreted and exercised afterwards.

●4.4Viewing and Listening
You may wonder what is needed if you want to apply to a foreign university and what Admissions Officers (招生官员) look for in your application. Watch the clips from the movie Legally Blonde, and you may get some tips. Then fill in the blanks in the sentences according to what you have heard. You may want to read all the sentences before viewing. New words and expressions that will appear in the video are explained in Chinese in brackets. In the movie, Elle Woods, a fashion major in college, applied to Harvard Law School and successfully got admitted.

●4.5Speaking
In this section, a Chinese student who wishes to study abroad is at a World University Fair. The student visits several booths in order to find out more about the foreign universities he/she is interested in. Work in groups of four people.
Each person picks a role. Each Admissions Officer must also pick a university he/she works for. Brainstorm what specific questions the student is going to ask. Then each Admissions Officer searches online to find answers. -
●4.6Writing
In this section, students, on one hand, are required to write an application letter to Yale University by Yilu Zhao in a Shanghai senior high school. Then, they should present their writing in a group of four to share their writing formats with each other. At the same time, they will have to check and fix grammar mistakes for each other. While doing their writing, students will have to pay special attention to the use of tenses.
On the other hand, students are allowed 30 minutes to write a Letter of Thanks, which is used to express one’s sincere gratitude to the receiver in the common letter format. Moreover, they should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words following the requirements given.

In this section, students are required to watch a video clip about a huge airplane built by Howard Hughes in 1947. Read these questions and discuss with your partner. Then work with your partner and try to answer the questions that follow.

●5.2Reading & Interacting
In this section, some information is shared with the students about pioneers of flight. With this article the topic is immediately clear from the title. But what is the point about these pioneers of flight that the author is trying to make? We can take it for granted that they shared a fascination with flight. However, you may find they differ in being widely separated in time and space, while being united in having insights that would eventually be proved useful. They were just ahead of their time. Three inventors separated by time and distance are united by their passion for flight. Their vision and courage helped make mankind’s dream of flying come true.

●5.3Language Focus
On one hand in this section, some collocations about nouns followed by the prepositions are introduced here, such as matter, interest, demand, alternative and effect. On the other hand, the usage of the sentence pattern Legend/Rumor/Word has it that … is interpreted and exercised afterwards.

In this section, you are going to watch a clip from the movie The Aviator, which is about the life of Howard Hughes. In the clip, Hughes was called to testify (作证) before the Senate War Investigating Committee (参议院战争调查委员会) in 1947 over the use of government funds for the Hercules. Watch carefully and fill in the blanks according to what you hear.

Imagine yourself to be Wang Qiang, a Chinese astronaut (A) and your partner a news reporter (B) who is to interview you just before you are ready to start your mission to the moon. Brainstorm together what questions the news reporter is going to ask, and how the astronaut will answer. Write a script together if necessary. And then do the role-play.

On the other hand, students are allowed 30 minutes to write a Letter of Apologies, which is a kind of social letter expressing your regrets for having made a mistake, having done something wrong or having caused a damage, trouble or inconvenience, etc.

第六章Maker Movement in China
With the development of science and technology , there are some people who have creative ideas and the ability to design, they gather and set up some organizations to make their ideas into reality without the aim of profit. So the maker movement occurs, and it is is very popular all over the world.

●6.1Opener
There is a brief introduction to maker, makerspace and the maker movement in this section, such as it’s background, core concept and it’s development.

●6.2Reading & Interacting
The maker movement is now gaining ground in China and makerspaces like Xinchejian and Seeed Studio are open to the public. A maker is someone who builds, creates or hacks physical materials . They are different from the traditional inventors who tinkered in garages. Makers often use software to design objects to be produced by desktop machines like 3-D printers. And they often cooperate and share their ideas online. The Chinese government is supporting this movement by building more government-supported innovation houses and organizing maker carnivals . And it is hoped that this movement can help Chinese industry move to a new stage.

Different kinds of Suffixation are introduced in this part. And two sentence patterns of the more....the more.....and “subject + participle phrase”are interpreted and exercised afterwards.

In this short video, Nemo talks about his life as a maker. Students are required to view a short video about him and focus only on what he has to say in response to the three questions listed below. Then, they will have to fill in the blanks with the words or phrases they get from the video clip by listening to it again.

In this section, students are required to work in a group of four to five people and decide upon a product that they are going to make together. Then prepare for a five-minute oral presentation about their project.

In this section, students, on one hand, are allowed to write a paragraph about the possible benefits of bringing the maker movement into the classroom,When they have finished, exchanged their writing with a partner, using the required criteria for evaluation.
On the other hand, students are allowed to write a Letter of congratulation for practical writing according to some specific requirements.
